Monitoring earthquakes

Earthquake detection. A seismogram is a record of the ground motions caused by seismic waves from an earthquake. A seismograph or seismometer is the measuring instrument that creates the seismogram. Almost all seismometers are based on the principle of inertia, that is, where a suspended mass tends to remain still when the ground moves.

Monitoring earthquakes. Monitoring Earthquakes. Seismometers. Seismic waves are detected with a seismometer, which contains a suspended pendulumlike mass that is kept as motionless as possible. The seismometer is connected to a seismograph, which records the motion of the mass during an earthquake as a series of squiggly lines called a seismogram.
