I wash and dry it first then fold several layers (5-6) of fabric slightly wider than the patch I want and use a sharpened hole saw in my drill press to cut the patches. In an hour I can make patches for all my BP guns to last me a year or more of shooting. F.The special tap would probably cost less than $10 so, for about $11 + postage you could have the repair in your hand. If you do go with the Heli-Coil® method, several things need to be mentioned. I would never build or request a flintlock rifle with a patent breech. When I dump a load of powder in the barrel I want it to flow directly to the touch hole. IMHO the modern patent breech does not allow that as well as a normal breech. Salt. 1.To get that grey look you have two options. 1) start with the barrel back "in the white" and in about 150 to 200 years it will have that nice grey look if you occasionally oil the barrel. 2) put a single application of cold blue on it.
